Institutional Case for Ethereum Liquid Staking

mETH Protocol is built for Ethereum’s role as core financial infrastructure and the growing adoption of institutional capital onchain.

Launched in 2015, Ethereum is the oldest smart contract-enabled blockchain operating today without a full chain halt, with its ecosystem accounting for the majority of global stablecoin supply and tokenized assets. As institutional ownership and use of ETH grows, what these parties are able to do with ETH becomes increasingly relevant.

For staking to serve that market, it needs to meet requirements around liquidity, distribution, and risk.

01 Liquidity

mETH represents staked ETH, giving holders access to staking rewards while keeping their assets liquid and usable onchain. To support institutional liquidity needs, our team introduced the Buffer Pool Upgrade, enabling more efficient mETH-to-ETH redemptions and reducing the friction typically associated with unstaking.

Smaller redemptions can be serviced through immediately available ETH, while larger redemption flows can draw on deeper liquidity supplied through Aave's ETH market. ETH allocated through Aave also earn lending yield while serving as a source of redemption liquidity, creating a blended model across staking yield, capital efficiency and access.

For institutions, that distinction matters. This structure gives mETH a dedicated liquidity layer designed specifically around redemption demand, rather than relying entirely on the validator exit queue.

In our latest snapshot here, more than 40,000 ETH is available for fast withdrawals.

02 Distribution

Distribution is not just about where an asset is listed, but whether it can fit into existing custody, collateral, trading, and settlement workflows. mETH combines capital efficiency and exchange distribution with security standards built to support institutional scale.

Below are some of the functional use cases available for mETH today.

  • Bybit: Users can buy, mint, and redeem mETH directly through the exchange. mETH can also be used as collateral across the Unified Trading Account (UTA) while continuing to accrue staking rewards, with UTA spanning products including spot margin, perpetuals, futures, and options.

  • Kraken: Users can buy, sell, and hold mETH directly through Kraken.

  • Copper, Fireblocks, Komainu, ByCustody: mETH held through these custody setups can be used across supported Bybit products including spot and margin, futures, options, and UTA Loans, with a 0% custody risk haircut.

  • ByCustody: Support also extends to Private Wealth Management, Institutional Loans, and Crypto Loans.

  • OSL: Custody support for mETH in Hong Kong within an SFC-licensed environment, with operations covered by SOC 2 Type 2 controls.

03 Risk

For institutional capital, yield comes after principal protection, operational resilience, and transparency.

mETH maintains a 100% protocol backing ratio, with onchain Proof of Reserves giving users direct visibility into the underlying ETH backing the protocol. At the validator layer, mETH has recorded zero slashing incidents to date, with staking infrastructure supported by operators including Kraken Staked and P2P.

Security is also built across multiple layers of the protocol. The team continues to invest in audits and security programs covering mETH architecture, oracles, and liquidity infrastructure, with independent reviews from firms including MixBytes, Hexens, BlockSec, and Exvul.

For institutions, the focus is not just staking yield, but whether the underlying infrastructure can be verified and managed within clear risk controls.

The Goal

As Ethereum takes on a larger role in global financial infrastructure, mETH Protocol will continue to expand alongside the needs of institutional capital. The objective is straightforward: make staked ETH more accessible, usable, and integrated across capital markets.
